Q. What does UMPlayer stand for?

UMPlayer stands for Universal Media Player as it strives to meet the needs of today’s diverse global audience; to be platform independent, to be able to play all types of media formats, to address the different needs from the most technologically savvy to the most laymen user and to do all this while maintaining an esthetically pleasing and intuitive user interface.


Q. Is UMPlayer free?

Yes, UMPlayer is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 and is and will always will be redistributed free of charge.

Q. How can I watch YouTube videos using UMPlayer?

To watch YouTube videos on UMPlayer you can search for videos using the search box on the top right corner, or alternatively you can press Ctrl+Y to bring up the YouTube dialog. Once you've picked the video you want to watch, simply double-click on the video and it will start playing.


Q. Do I need Flash player in order to watch YouTube videos?

No, with UMPlayer you can watch YouTube videos even without having Adobe Flash player installed.


Q. Can I take screenshots of movies using UMPlayer?

Yes, to take a screenshot of the video displayed by UMPlayer, you just need to click the screenshot button or press the pre-defined screenshot hotkey or via the menu Video -> Screenshot.


Q. Where does UMPlayer store its configuration file?

UMPlayer creates a configuration file on a per user basis (there is no global configuration file), meaning that if you modify any options, then a configuration file will be created in your user directory, which its location depends on the Operating System you are running:

Yes, you may distribute an original or a modified version of the UMPlayer software as long as you comply with its license terms.

Note: In order to authenticate the source and verify the integrity of content, you may not redistribute any digitally signed executable outside its original signed installer.


Q. Which operating systems does UMPlayer support?

UMPlayer currently works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X 10+, and GNU/Linux operating systems.


Q. Which formats does UMPlayer supports?

UMPlayer supports over 270 different media formats, the most popular of which are AAC, AC3, ASF, AVI, DIVX, FLV, H.263, Matroska, MOV, MP3, MP4, MPEG, OGG, QT, RealMedia, VOB, Vorbis, WAV, WMA, WMV, XVID and many more. For a complete list of supported codecs click here.


Q. Does UMPlayer support DVDs from all regions?

UMPlayer is fully capable of playing any DVD from all regions as long as your DVD drive permits so. UMPlayer needs raw access to the DVD drive in order to crack the encryption key, but some drives don’t allow raw access to the drive until it has done a region check, so the best way to determine if UMPlayer is able to play a certain DVD is by testing it out.


Q. How can I record YouTube videos?

To record a video, simply press the record button, which is located next to the stop button, please note that the record button will only appear when playing a YouTube stream. Or alternatively you can choose to record a video by clicking the 'Record video' option in the search results dialog context menu.

Q. What should I do if UMPlayer is acting strange?

The first thing you should try is to reset the preferences by either reinstalling the application or manually deleting the configuration file (see previous question) and restart UMPlayer.
